5 day RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Course
A Coastal skipper has the knowledge to skipper a motor cruiser on coastal passages but not necessarily the experience for longer cruises.
Required pre course experience
- 15 days with 2 as skipper
- 300 miles
- 8 night hours
Assumed knowledge Navigation to Coastal Skipper shorebased standard, boat handling to Day Skipper practical standard.

RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Exam
Pre exam requirements
- Over 17 years of age
- Restricted [VHF only] Radio operators certificate or higher grade of marine radio certificate
- Valid 1st aid certificate
- Sea time - 800 miles logged within 10 years prior to exam; 30 days living on board; 2 days as skipper; 12 night hours.
- For holders of Coastal Skipper course completion certificate the seatime is reduced to 400 miles, 20 days living on board, 12 night hours, 2 days as skipper. Half the qualifying sea time must be in tidal waters.
Exam duration is usually about 6-10 hours for 1 candidate and 8-14 hours for 2. The examiner can ask questions fromany part of the syllabus up to coastal skipper and set tasks to demonstrate candidates ability as a coastal skipper.
